LACMA: questions answered
What people ask me about LACMA, and my answers. The project itself has its own page.
How did you settle a contested change order?
That one was not really a change order. The contractor submitted a change order for site protection, meaning plastic, dust control and everything their original bid left out when it was approved. The project was contracted before I came in, but I sat in the change order review. We went back to the contract and to code. The contractor's own contract also had conflicting language whose fine print covered site protection loosely, yet enough to protect us. Contractors sometimes omit what you assume is included and then bill you for it. We won that one.
How did the active campus and its restricted hours alter your fabrication and installation plan?
Not much, in how we planned. Hard sites and hard schedules, night work and limited access were familiar to us. We stayed within whatever allowances we were given.
What was the hardest acceptance problem before the outdoor sculpture could open?
Keeping people off it before it was finished. It was essentially a usable skate park, so it had to be safe first. That meant round-the-clock security until it was done. Facilities went over it against their checklist and signed off. No signature, no opening: that was the rule on that campus.
