Choosing which grinders to bet on

We could have signed 100 golfers in a month; we signed 8, chosen for story, camera comfort and willingness to self-record.

The show followed unranked golfers grinding on the mini tours. Signing them was the easy part, because they are broke and will accept almost anything. With the show in hand, we could have contracted 100 of them within a month.

We signed 8. We picked them for a story worth telling, comfort on camera, and a willingness to record and interview themselves after every event.

Each one was a moonshot with a very low chance of success, and each took equipment, time and sponsorship from us. Better golfers were harder to sign, which ruled out ranking as the filter. We filtered on story and on work ethic in front of the camera.

Eight signed. A few good golfers were turned away because they did not want to do the recording.

When anyone will sign, the real job is choosing. Write the requirements down before you pitch. The ones who will not meet them are the ones you would have regretted.
