Hearing the bigger business hiding behind the pitch

A mattress topper owner pitched my partner and me, and we heard the real opportunity in his second product.

The head of a mattress topper company pitched a partner and me. Real sales in Ireland were already behind him. He wanted help entering the US and raising two to three million dollars, all framed around the topper.

When he finished, my partner and I traded a look. Neither of us believed the topper was the opportunity. The stronger one was a second product of his, earlier in development: a dressing for wound care that uses neurostimulation and the same core material. We proposed a retainer plus equity engagement aimed at that.

The topper had already proved the technology: a pathogen barrier verified in a lab, zero returns and genuine international traction. Wound care offers better clinical margins and pull, and giving him a US entry with real scientific credibility lifts both products together. That logic is why retainer plus equity made more sense than a flat fee.

Next steps: seek scientific validation through my own network, introduce him to a sleep apnea device company about a bundled product ecosystem, and write up a formal proposal for the retainer plus equity.

Always listen for a second product hiding in the first pitch, because it can be worth more than what you were asked to sell. I looked beyond what he believed he was selling and showed him the larger version of his own company.
